Transport - RegionalOn Dial-a-Ride: " You will be collected in an accessible car or minibus and as there are others using the service you will have to be flexible about the time you have specified." Dial-a-ride Most councils operate a Dial-a-ride scheme. This is where you register in advance to become a member and can then book local journeys at very low fares. You will be collected in an accessible car or minibus and as there are others using the service you will have to be flexible about the time you have specified. The driver will see you (and your shopping) to your door. In the Leven and East Coast area of Scotland there is also a "Dial-On-Demand" service being trialled. Concessionary fares Many councils will offer a disabled person's bus pass so you can have cheaper fares. In this case you should contact your local council directly to find out what is available. From April 2008 the bus pass issued by councils in England will be valid on local bus services throughout the whole of the country. It will be a national "smartcard", except in London where the existing Freedom Pass will be updated to include the logo for the national scheme. In Scotland there is the Blind Persons Travel Pass, which covers the whole of Scotland for anyone registered as blind or visually impaired, and this offers free travel at all times on buses, trains, Glasgow underground and island ferries. Good Neighbour groups In many areas there are "Good Neighbour" groups which offer lifts for a nominal rate based on the mileage. Check with your local council to see if you have a Good Neighbour Driving Service near you. The WRVS also provide support in many areas. Disabled Go has useful information for some of the UK but only a few areas are covered. Please let us know of any schemes or facilities in your local area. |
