Going Out / HolidaysOn accommodation: "Iceland Farm Holidays guide was great, letting me know which places could cater for me and what standard of rooms they offered." Many holiday venues make arrangements for disabled visitors, and some companies exist specifically to cater for us. Some examples of them are the Disabled Holiday Directory and Access Travel. Disabled Travel Advice also offer information about holiday and leisure travel. UK holidays While many traditional B&Bs will have steps and cramped facilities, most hotel chains can provide a room with full disabled facilities (large bathroom, room to move, step free access) at no extra cost if you ask when booking. Personally I have benefitted from this around the UK at JD Wetherspoon Lodges, Dakota, Holiday Inn and Premier Inn. If you need a wetroom rather than low-height bath, do call the hotel in person to check; Premier Inn in particular have varied facilities in their "disabled rooms". A few Holiday Inns also offer a free room for your PA. If you need a ceiling hoist, you can find information about suitable hotels at Ceiling Hoist Users Club. Whereever you are going, you can read and add reviews of accommodation, travel and tourist spots at Inaccessible UK, which can be invaluable when planning a trip. Overseas providers In Brittany, France, wheelchair accessible accommodation is provided thanks to I Need A Holiday Too who have six adapted apartments available for rent. Icelandic Farm Holidays have many accessible guesthouses in Iceland and I took advantage of this for my honeymoon! They categorise farmhouse letting rooms from dormitories to en-suites. You choose the level of accommodation desired, buy vouchers redeemable at any venue around the island, then call a day in advance to book. If you have access needs, farms will accept your booking further in advance to ensure they reserve a room which meets your needs. Accessible accommodation is identified with a wheelchair symbol (you can use the website's search facility to find suitable places). The rooms are tested for step free access; if you need a lot of room to move, or rails in the bathroom, do check with the venue as not all "accessible" places provide this (though many do). If you know of other accessible holidays, please let me know. |
